A Night Full Of Three-Wide Action
After a long night of racing and Mother Nature being a bit of trouble on May 16th, this past Friday night’s races were a breath of fresh air - and full of double features. The crowd was treated to not one, but two features in the Legends, Hobby Stocks, and Sport Mods classes, plus the Late Models and the first Enduro Sprint of the year!
LEGENDS.DIRECT LEGENDS
The first feature of the evening was led to the green by Danny Lehmkuhl and Dallas Kibbe. Lehmkuhl took control of the race at the start. Austin Slabaugh was all over the bumper of Lehmkuhl but was not able to get around. With two laps left, Kevin Korsmo and Slabaugh made contact, sending Slabaugh around. Korsmo tapped out, allowing Slabaugh back to the runner-up spot. On the restart, Slabaugh was all over the leader's bumper, but Lehmkuhl held off to win.
In the second feature, Korsmo made moves quickly to take over the lead with Kibbe close behind. The first yellow came out when Dan Tiegen went for a solo spin into turn one. Lehmkuhl would make the pass for the runner-up spot, but Korsmo had strong restarts to get his second win of the year.
ANDERSON AUTOMOTIVE HOBBY STOCKS
Adam Petrzelka swept both of the Anderson Automotive Hobby Stock features, continuing his success in the class. Brayden Beauregard led the opening laps of the first race with Hayden Sherman behind. Three laps in, Petrzelka went to 2nd and then three laps later went to the inside and took the top spot and captured the victory.
In the second feature, Chad Vozenilek and Hayden Sherman jockeyed for the top spot but Petrzelka quickly got up and made it a three-way battle. On the outside, Petrzelka won the battle and controlled the race when the yellow flag came out with 7 to go. When the feature restarted, Petrzelka got out ahead of Jason Sherman to cruise to the checkered flag.
CASSILL MOTORS SPORT MODS
The first Cassill Motors Sport Mods feature saw Matt Franks, Chad Siems, and Tallan Chandler exit turn two three-wide. Chandler used the outside to take advantage while Nathan Ballard worked his way to 2nd. With 9 laps to go, Lennon Jones and Steve Wimer brought out the caution but were able to continue. Ballard would then take the win on the restart.
Feature number two started even more wild, with three-wide once again and five cars under a blanket. As Siems and Schnoor fought for the top spot, Ballard again caught the front and worked the outside with Schnoor in 2nd. Siems and Chandler made contact, which brought out the yellow, and sent Chandler to the rear. Ballard would go on to win, with Schnoor and Bryan Baxter rounding out the podium.
SUNLINE HORNETS
The Sunline Hornets heat race was won by John Carnahan, who took the lead from Josh Cassill with 3 to go. Kurt Bohnsack also snuck by Cassill to finish 2nd.
In the feature, Cassill and Duane Hochstedler started on the front row, and it was quickly three-wide with Vozenilek, who snagged the lead. Bohnsack and Carnahan moved to just behind Vozenilek and began a tight battle. Bohnsack wiggle, and at one point, some brief contact was made, which allowed Vozenilek to have a clean run to the checkered flag for his first win of the year.
ALL SEASONS AUTOMOTIVE SPORTSMANS
Will Zamastil and Corey Crispin were joined in a three-wide battle by Dave Ballstaedt in the All Seasons Automotive Sportsman heat race. Ballstaedt had to back out of it, which gave Crispin the advantage. On the white flag, Ness made another three-wide move to take the lead and the heat win.
Ness would go on to sweep the night after starting 5th and progressively moving up, where he took the lead from Ballstaedt on lap 8. Ballstaedt had led each lap up until that point over Crispin and Brandon Herb.
PERFORMANCE CONCEPTS LATE MODELS
Michael Weber had a brief look under Kacey Korsmo in the Performance Concepts Late Models dash, but ultimately could not complete the pass, which gave Korsmo the heat win.
The feature would go better for Weber, who passed Lehmkuhl on lap 6 to take over the lead. He worked up a nearly 3-second lead over Lehmkuhl before the race concluded. Korsmo would finish in third.
MT VERNON ROAD TIRE AND MARION TIRE ENDURO SPRINT SERIES
In the first Mt. Vernon Road Tire/Marion Tire Enduro Sprint of the year, it was Cody Palmer who led every lap in dominant fashion to drive to Green State Credit Union Victory Lane. Palmer finished with a 2-second advantage on Zach Sedlacek.
